THE EDUCATIONAL CONCEPT

The history of the SM Drama Academy began about twenty five years ago, when Serguei Melkonian decided to create Theater with a unique style. The small theatrical studio evolved into the International Arlekin Theatre. After a long series of successful guest performances in the USA, it had been recognized as one of the best stages of California. The SM Drama Academy is unique in many ways. Its style is based on principles of Brecht, Meyerkhold, Mikhail Checkov and Vakhtangov, and its repertory is primarily based on the European Classical and "la commedia dell'Arte" (the Italian comedy of masks) schools. The SM Academy is a Professional and International Drama School of Acting, theatrical management, costumes, lights, music and dance. The SM Drama Academy has two branches - one in Los Angeles and another in Moscow.
The Academy is also considered unique for its multilingual theatrical education. It is well known, that traditions of the modern theatre originate from Ancient Rome (Seneca, Plautus, Terence). In Medieval ages French and Spanish art styles quickly became cornerstone principles of the contemporary performance art.

The students of the SM Theatre Academy of Performing Arts have an opportunity to practice on the teaching of the Arlekin Theatre and to study great European theatrical traditions and customs in the USA and Russia.
